SSC meeting Thursday 29th March

There were a few 3rd year relevant matters to report this session:

LIBRARY – Easter Vacation – Closed Good Friday (6th April) and Easter Monday (9th April).

New bike shed – will have spaces for 300. Will open after the Easter break.

DISSERTATIONS – Jon asked me to remind you all that the dissertation deadline has been moved forward to the 8th May.

URBAN LIFE AND SOCIAL CONTROL

Results – John Williams from the Sociology Dept SSC attended this meeting. He suggested that the release of these results to sociology students earlier than crim students was just a co-ordination issue and could be easily resolved.

Exam timetabling – Jon has emailed the exams office to notify them of the difficulties experienced with three exams taking place in the exams hall at the time and causing a disturbance because of various finishing times. Unfortunately, he is yet to hear back from them.

NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY – Messages of many thanks come from Jon, the response rate this year topped that of last year, so thanks from me too to everyone who took the time to fill it in!

Student Staff Committee Meeting Thurs 29th March

Also, if you’re on campus and needing a bit of quiet space to read/work dont forget the department resource room. Its accessed via the second door along at the dept and is on the right as soon as you enter! The key can be obtained from the department receptionist…its full of journals and there is a pc so when the library is heaving there is always that space.

‘I Love My Academic’ is back!

Today marks the return of Leicester SU’s ‘I Love My Academic’ campaign…

This is the chance for students to nominate an academic staff member who has been particularly engaging, innovative and supportive in their teaching.

Rugby Varsity

Rugby Varsity will be on Wednesday 21^st March this year at the Tigers’ Stadium on Welford Road. 

Gates will open at 6pm.

Women’s kick off will be at 6.30pm and Men’s kick off at 8pm.

Tickets cost £5 in advance or £7.50 on the door. Tickets can be purchased from members of both clubs i.e. Kirsty Minnis (ED Unit), The Point and the Varsity stool in the Percy Gee building.

SSC meeting Tuesday 28th February

Hey guys,

I’ve just had this semester’s SSC. As the response I had from you all was pretty good there is not much to report.

However, Jackie Hanes the criminology librarian was present at the meeting and she mentioned the library’s More Books Campaign and the new facility they have introduced for you to report noise in the Library by text message.

MORE BOOKS CAMPAIGN

• Is running throughout February, so tomorrow is the last day to send in any requests for particular books….you can do this via http://www2.le.ac.uk/library/services/suggestbook/morebooks
• Alternatively, you can contact Jackie directly regarding books and resources.
• Don’t forget, more books can be requested for particular modules or for dissertation purposes.

NOISE IN THE LIBRARY

• If you find yourself too engrossed to find a library staff member, you can now text 07900 436878 with where you are and what the problem is.

e.g. “Silent Zone, Blue Zone floor 3 – group of students chatting” or “Silent PC Zone 2.2 student talking on a mobile phone”

URBAN LIFE AND SOCIAL CONTROL MODULE

• Jon and Neil took concerns about the examination room and multiple exams occurring together creating noise disturbance seriously and said they would do what they can to avoid this happening again.

ACTIONS FROM THE MARCH MEETING

• Assessment issues will be considered in a departmental review of the entire BA programme during the summer, the staff were grateful to those of you who have raised concerns about the way certain modules are assessed.
• As requested, reading lists should have been received well before the start of term within the module outline and the timetable was released earlier than in previous years.
• More precise guidance on how to format essays was suggested; Neil and Jon agreed with this idea and will seek to incorporate such guidance in future course handbooks.
• In response to queries about marking, James Treadwell said that assessments are marked anonymously by first and second markers.
• As a result of queries raised ahead of last semester’s meeting Jon is working with module leaders and students to improve integration of all and contribution within module seminars.

Lastly, I would please ask those of you that haven’t already done so to complete the National Student Survey via the link you have been emailed, as currently there is only a 50% response rate. It doesn’t take long, and will be much appreciated by Jon and the rest of the staff.

National University Mental Health and Welbeing Day

As today is the first ever National University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day the University is asking students to be self-reflexive and give themselves a quick mental-health check-up:

Do you get your 5 a day?

Most people have heard about the importance of eating your 5 fruit and veg a day for your physical health – but what about your 5 a day for mental health? How can you help look after your mind as well as your body?

Here are 5 daily steps for helping to improve your mental health:

1. Connect with people around you
2. Do something active
3. Take notice of the world – catch sight of the beautiful, remark on the unusual
4. Learn something new
5. Give to others – do something nice for a friend or a stranger

It seems straightforward and obvious, but if you start feeling like you need a pick me up, these points are a good starting point for regaining your balance…

Graduation!

It’s official, we graduate Friday 13th July at 11am…

“The Graduation pages (http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/sas2/graduation) will be updated by the end of this week which will have all the information you need.

Registration for the graduation ceremonies will be online, and an email will be sent to all students directly during Easter to inform you on how and when to register online.”

The Big Debate

As part of the Leicester Executive Elections…The Big Debate will be taking place this Thursday at 6.30pm in the Rattray lecture theatre. 

This will be hosted by Aaron Porter, and is a chance for students to ask the candidates questions about what they would do if elected. If you have anything to ask the candidates you can submit questions prior to the event by emailing them to Kirsty Minnis (km273@le.ac.uk).
